Do you have a permanent altar set up in your home?
The simple answer is yes. I have a small altar set up in my home; it’s cute, and hidden in my bookshelf to stay safe from my kids who love to get into my magick, and I love it. I also have a very beautiful outdoor altar all set up in an outdoor hutch. These spaces mean a lot to me and my magick because I did not always use to have a permanent set up.
For many years, as I have practiced witchcrafts since fourth grade, I was keeping my magick a secret. I was attending a catholic school from K-8 grade and it was tough because I knew I did not belong there. My journey through a catholic school as a witch is a story for another day. I can tell you that I had a very supportive family; a catholic micro biologist father and an atheist RN nurse for a mother were a pretty good balance. I did however realize that what I was doing should be my secret. I had a huge beautiful wooden chest that I kept all my magick tools in and I would set up an altar as I needed for rituals. I actually really enjoyed the process of taking it all out, doing a ritual and putting it all back again. As I got older I fluctuated between being really open with my craft or being very secretive depending on where I was living or working at the time. Now as an upper 30s mom of two boys I am completely out of the broom closet and have made a space over the last few years for my magick.
I share all this in hopes that you can relate to both sides of my experience and respect where you are in your own personal journey. I will say, being out and open is the best! I also completely understand the need to hide and protect yourself. There are still times when I feel I want to hide from the judgement of those who know not what I do.
